QROPS Advisor Alberta - UK Pension Transfer to Canada
Alberta has consistently been one of Canada’s fastest-growing provinces, driven by the energy sector, technology, and a quality of life that attracts professionals from across the UK. Calgary and Edmonton are home to well-established British expat communities – many of whom arrived during oil boom cycles carrying substantial UK employer pension entitlements that have since been sitting in pounds sterling, untouched, on the wrong side of the Atlantic.
Simon Huften is a QROPS specialist licensed in Alberta who works with British expats across Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and beyond. He transfers UK employer pensions – both Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution – directly into Canadian RRSPs under the QROPS framework. There is no fee to you. A 15-minute consultation will confirm whether your transfer is viable.

British Expats in Alberta - Why This Province Matters for UK Pension Holders
Alberta’s British expat community has a distinct profile. Engineers, energy sector specialists, geoscientists, tradespeople, and finance professionals who came to Alberta through the oil and gas industry – particularly during the boom cycles of the 1990s through to the 2010s – often hold DB pension entitlements from major UK employers: BP, Shell, BG Group, National Grid, British Coal, British Steel, and the full range of UK energy and utilities sector employers. These are often the largest CETV values in the market – final salary pensions that have been accruing for decades.
For those expats, the situation is straightforward: a UK employer pension denominated in pounds sterling, governed by HMRC, and from April 2027 potentially subject to 40% UK Inheritance Tax on the residual fund at death. Meanwhile, the RRSP is what the rest of their Canadian retirement plan uses. QROPS is the regulatory framework that transfers the pension from one world to the other – permanently, with no UK tax triggered at point of transfer.
Alberta also offers a material tax advantage for RRSP and RRIF drawdown that no other major Canadian province can match – covered in full in the dedicated section below.

Alberta's Tax Advantage for RRSP and RRIF Withdrawals
Alberta is the most tax-efficient province in Canada for RRSP and RRIF drawdown income. This is a material consideration for British expats who are weighing whether – and when – to act on a pension transfer.
The Alberta Income Tax Advantage
Alberta operates a flat provincial income tax rate of 10% (with some progressive bands at higher incomes), compared with Ontario’s graduated rates of 5.05% — 13.16% and British Columbia’s 5.06% — 20.5%. The practical effect: a British expat drawing RRIF income in Alberta pays considerably less provincial income tax than an identical income drawn in Ontario or BC.
Province | Provincial Income Tax Rate | Effect on RRIF Drawdown |
Alberta | 10% flat rate | Lowest provincial tax on RRIF withdrawals of the three target provinces |
Ontario | 5.05%–13.16% graduated | Higher marginal rate on larger RRIF withdrawals |
British Columbia | 5.06%–20.5% graduated | Highest top marginal rate of the three provinces |
The QROPS transfer itself is a tax-deferred rollover under paragraph 60(j) of Canada’s Income Tax Act for employer-sponsored pensions – no Alberta or federal tax is triggered at the point of transfer. The tax efficiency applies from drawdown onwards.
No Provincial Sales Tax
Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Combined with the flat income tax rate, this creates the most tax-efficient retirement income environment of any major Canadian province. For British expats planning multi-decade RRIF drawdown, this distinction is worth tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the fund.
No Provincial Tax on RRSP Contribution Room
The QROPS transfer into a Canadian RRSP under paragraph 60(j) does not require RRSP contribution room – it is a direct rollover, not a contribution. This applies equally in all Canadian provinces. What Alberta adds is the most favourable drawdown tax environment once the funds are in the account.

April 2027 UK Inheritance Tax Deadline - Time-Sensitive for Alberta Residents
APRIL 2027 UK IHT DEADLINE - ACTION REQUIRED NOW
From April 2027, UK pension death benefits will be included in your estate for UK Inheritance Tax – potentially taxed at 40% on the residual fund at your death. A QROPS transfer to a Canadian RRSP removes your pension from the UK IHT regime entirely.
THE DEADLINE ARITHMETIC (September 2026)
- Defined Benefit (DB) pensions: the transfer process takes 12–16 weeks. A DB client who starts in September 2026 may complete before April 2027 – but the window is now. A client who waits until January 2027 is unlikely to complete in time.
- Defined Contribution (DC) pensions: the process takes 6–10 weeks. DC clients have more time, but delay reduces certainty of completion before the deadline.
If you hold a UK DB pension and are considering a transfer before the April 2027 deadline, the practical window to begin is immediately. Not Q1 2027 – now.

Strata QROPS is compensated by the Canadian investment provider (iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance) only after your transfer completes. Nothing is charged to you at any stage.
Both DB and DC transfers
Simon handles both pension types, including the largest and most complex DB pensions from UK energy sector employers. Most competitors handle one type or handle QROPS as a small part of a broader practice.
Active CETV management (DB)
Simon monitors CETV windows and coordinates the FCA advice requirement to prevent expiry. A DB transfer that lapses at the CETV stage must restart entirely - extending the timeline by months.
Phone and video consultations

QROPS Eligibility for British Expats in Alberta
You qualify to transfer your UK employer pension to a Canadian RRSP via QROPS if you meet all three of the following conditions:
01
You hold a UK employer pension
Defined Benefit (final salary or career average) or Defined Contribution (money purchase). Both qualify. UK State Pension is not transferable via QROPS.
02
You are permanently resident in Canada
You must be tax-resident in Canada – specifically in Alberta or another Canadian province. The QROPS receiving account must be in the same country as your residency to avoid the 25% Overseas Transfer Charge.
03
You are aged 55 to 70
The transfer window opens at age 55 (rising to 57 in April 2028 under UK Finance Act 2022). The practical upper age limit is 70 – Canadian RRSP accounts must convert to RRIF by December 31 of the year you turn 71, so transfers must complete before that point.
If you meet all three conditions, your transfer is likely viable. The next step is a free 15-minute consultation with Simon to assess your specific pension and circumstances.
When a QROPS Transfer May Not Be the Right Decision
A QROPS transfer is not the right decision for every British expat in Alberta. A free consultation will tell you which category applies to your situation – but here are the scenarios where the answer is likely no, or not yet:
If you are in any of these categories, the consultation remains worthwhile – Simon can confirm which applies and advise on timing or alternatives.
- You hold a UK State Pension only. The State Pension is not transferable via QROPS. This applies to many expats who have only National Insurance contribution history - not an employer scheme.
- You are under 55. The minimum age for a QROPS transfer is 55 (rising to 57 in April 2028). Transferring before this age would be classified as an unauthorised payment by HMRC - triggering a charge of up to 55%.
- You are planning to return to the UK within 5 full UK tax years of the transfer. If you return to the UK within 5 full UK tax years (running April 6 to April 5) of the transfer date, HMRC may apply the 25% Overseas Transfer Charge retroactively - even if the transfer was exempt at the time.
- Your pension's Cash Equivalent Transfer Value is very low. For DB pensions, the FCA requires independent financial advice before transfer if the CETV exceeds £30,000. Where CETVs are very small, the cost-benefit of a transfer may not stack up. The consultation will assess this.
Frequently Asked Questions - QROPS Alberta
Is Simon Huften licensed to advise on pension transfers in Alberta?
Yes. Simon Huften is licensed to advise in Alberta and has worked with British expats across Calgary, Edmonton, and throughout the province. He is regulated under the relevant provincial framework in Alberta. Simon is compensated by the Canadian investment provider (iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance) only after your transfer completes. There is no client fee at any stage.
I work in the energy sector in Calgary and have a DB pension from a UK employer - can I transfer it?
Yes. Defined Benefit pensions from UK employers – including energy, oil and gas, utilities, and other major sector employers – are transferable via QROPS. If your DB pension has a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) above £30,000, UK FCA regulations require independent financial advice from an FCA-regulated UK adviser before the transfer can proceed. Simon coordinates this step – it is a legal protection, not a barrier, and it is the only out-of-pocket cost in the process. DB pensions from major UK energy sector employers often carry substantial CETV values; the free consultation will give you a full picture of what your transfer looks like.
Alberta has no provincial sales tax and a flat 10% income tax rate - does that affect a QROPS transfer?
Alberta’s tax environment is the most favourable of any major Canadian province for RRSP and RRIF drawdown income. The QROPS transfer itself is a tax-deferred rollover under paragraph 60(j) of Canada’s Income Tax Act for employer-sponsored pensions – no Alberta or federal tax is triggered at the point of transfer. The tax advantage applies from the point of drawdown: RRIF withdrawals are taxed as ordinary Alberta income at the flat 10% provincial rate, significantly below the graduated rates in Ontario and BC. For a British expat planning 20+ years of RRIF drawdown, the cumulative difference is material.
I moved to Calgary from the UK several years ago. Is it too late to transfer?
How long ago you moved to Canada does not affect your QROPS eligibility. The transfer remains available as long as you are currently tax-resident in Canada, you hold a UK employer pension, and you are aged 55 to 70. The only timing consideration is your plans: if you are planning to return to the UK within 5 full UK tax years, that affects the analysis. The consultation will cover this.
What is the timeline for a QROPS transfer for an Alberta resident?
Defined Contribution (DC) transfers typically complete in 6–10 weeks. Defined Benefit (DB) transfers take 12–16 weeks due to the FCA independent advice requirement for pensions with a CETV above £30,000. Simon actively manages the CETV window throughout the DB process to prevent expiry – a critical step, as an expired CETV requires the entire process to restart from scratch. Given the April 2027 IHT deadline, a DB client in Alberta who starts in September or October 2026 is within the viable window to complete before April 2027.
Do I need to travel to Calgary or Edmonton for the consultation?
No. All consultations are conducted by phone or video call. The full transfer process is remote-manageable – Simon handles all paperwork, liaison with the UK pension scheme trustees, and coordination with the Canadian RRSP provider. There is no requirement to attend any office in person at any stage.
