QROPS Advisor British Columbia - UK Pension Transfer to Canada
British Columbia is home to one of the largest concentrations of UK-born residents in Canada – with Statistics Canada census data consistently placing over 140,000 UK-born individuals in BC, the majority concentrated in Metro Vancouver and the Capital Region. Many arrived during their peak working years carrying UK employer pensions – from NHS trusts, local councils, financial services firms, and private sector employers – that are now sitting in a different currency, under different rules, and from April 2027, potentially subject to UK Inheritance Tax at 40%.

A QROPS transfer moves your UK employer pension into a Canadian RRSP under paragraph 60(j) of the Income Tax Act – a direct, tax-free rollover that has been completed for British expats across British Columbia in 2025 and 2026. You may have read that this transfer is no longer possible. It is – and the HMRC ROPS list confirms two Canadian providers with active qualifying scheme status today.
Simon Huften is a QROPS specialist licensed in British Columbia who works with British expats across Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island, and the BC Interior to transfer their UK employer pensions to Canadian RRSPs. The transfer is free to you. A 15-minute consultation will confirm exactly what your options are.
HMRC ROPS Verification - Canadian Providers
Simon Huften verifies HMRC ROPS list status at the start and close of every transfer. The two Canadian providers he works with:
- iA Clarington - confirmed on HMRC ROPS list
- Industrial Alliance - confirmed on HMRC ROPS list

British Expats in British Columbia - Why This Province Matters
British Columbia draws more UK-born residents than almost any other Canadian province. With over 140,000 UK-born individuals recorded in BC in the most recent Statistics Canada census data – the majority in Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria – this is one of the most significant concentrations of potential QROPS-eligible prospects in Canada.
The UK pension question is particularly acute in BC because many British expats arrived during the high-value employment years of their careers and accumulated significant Defined Benefit entitlements before emigrating. Pensions from NHS trusts, local councils, utilities, banks, and private sector employers are now managed from a province that uses a completely different currency, tax framework, and financial system. QROPS provides the legal pathway to bring them home – and Simon Huften is the only QROPS specialist with a dedicated BC advisory practice. QROPS Canada – complete guide
Victoria, consistently described as having the largest proportion of UK-born residents of any major Canadian city, is a specific concentration point. Many UK retirees relocate there deliberately for its climate and cultural familiarity – and bring DB pension entitlements from long public-sector careers that are ideally suited to the QROPS transfer process.

Every UK employer pension transfer Simon handles in British Columbia follows the same rigorous process. What distinguishes BC transfers is the regulatory context: Simon is licensed to advise in British Columbia under the BCFSA framework, and the transfer mechanics are governed by HMRC rules in the UK and CRA rules in Canada.

April 2027 UK IHT Deadline - British Columbia Clients
APRIL 2027 UK IHT DEADLINE – BRITISH COLUMBIA CLIENTS
From April 2027, UK pension death benefits will be included in your estate for UK Inheritance Tax – potentially taxed at 40% on amounts above the £325,000 nil-rate band. A BC client with a £600,000 DB pension faces a potential IHT liability of £110,000 or more on pension assets alone, depending on their wider estate. A QROPS transfer to a Canadian RRSP moves your pension out of the UK IHT regime entirely. The pension becomes a Canadian domestic asset – not subject to UK IHT regardless of your estate size.
DB transfers take 12–16 weeks. The practical window to begin before the April 2027 deadline is Q1 2027 at the very latest – and ideally before the end of 2026. If you have a DB pension, act now.

Why British Expats in British Columbia Choose Strata QROPS
Simon Huften has spent over a decade specialising exclusively in UK employer pension transfers to Canada. No other service, no other market. That singular focus – and the BC licensing that backs it – translates directly into faster, more accurate transfers for clients across British Columbia.
QROPS-only specialist
10+ years exclusively in UK-to-Canada pension transfers. Not a general financial planning firm with QROPS as a side service.
$250M+ in completed transfers
AUM reflects real-world experience at scale, with completed transfers in 2025 and 2026.
Licensed in British Columbia
Simon Huften is licensed to advise in British Columbia under the BCFSA regulatory framework. Your transfer is handled by an adviser registered in your province - not an out-of-province firm claiming to serve BC from a national page.
No fees to you
Simon is compensated by iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance on completion - not by the client. Nothing is charged to you at any stage.
Both DB and DC transfers
Simon handles both pension types. Most competitors handle one or the other - or treat QROPS as a small part of a broader financial planning practice.
Active CETV management (DB)
Simon monitors CETV windows and coordinates the advice requirement to prevent expiry. DB transfers that lapse at the CETV stage must restart entirely.
HMRC ROPS verification on every transfer
Simon confirms iA Clarington and Industrial Alliance are on the HMRC ROPS list at the start and close of every transfer - not just at client onboarding.
Phone and video consultations
No travel required. Clients across BC - from Vancouver to Kelowna to Victoria - complete transfers entirely remotely.
QROPS Eligibility for British Expats in British Columbia
You qualify to transfer your UK employer pension to a Canadian RRSP via QROPS if you meet all three of the following conditions:
01
You hold a UK employer pension
Defined Benefit (final salary / career average) or Defined Contribution (money purchase). Both qualify. UK State Pension is not transferable via QROPS.
02
You are permanently resident in Canada
You must be tax-resident in Canada – specifically in British Columbia or another Canadian province. The receiving RRSP must be in the same country as the member to avoid the 25% Overseas Transfer Charge.
03
You are aged 55 to 70
The transfer window opens at age 55. The practical upper limit is 70 – Canadian RRSP accounts must convert to RRIF by December 31 of the year you turn 71, so transfers must complete before that point.
PLANNING NOTE – AGED 55 OR 56?
The UK pension access age rises from 55 to 57 in April 2028 under the Finance Act 2022. If you are currently 55 or 56, your transfer window is open now. After April 2028, new transfers will require you to be 57. If you are approaching 55 and want to transfer shortly after becoming eligible, start the conversation now – the process takes up to 16 weeks for Defined Benefit pensions.

Frequently Asked Questions - QROPS British Columbia
Is Simon Huften licensed to advise on pension transfers in British Columbia?
Yes. Simon Huften is licensed to advise in British Columbia and has worked with British expats across Metro Vancouver, Victoria, and the BC Interior. His advisory activities in BC are regulated under the applicable BCFSA framework. He is compensated by the Canadian investment provider – iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance – only after your transfer completes. There is no client fee at any stage.
I live in Vancouver - how does the consultation work?
All consultations are conducted by phone or video. There are no in-person meetings required at any stage of the QROPS transfer process – it is entirely document-driven. Clients in Vancouver, Victoria, and throughout BC complete their transfers remotely. Simon will schedule a call at a time that works for you.
I moved to BC from the UK several years ago. Is it too late to transfer my pension?
The transfer window closes at age 70 – before the mandatory RRIF conversion at age 71. How long ago you moved to BC does not affect eligibility. What matters is that you are currently tax-resident in Canada, you hold a UK employer pension, and you are aged 55 to 70. If you meet these three conditions, your transfer remains available.
What is the Overseas Transfer Charge and does it apply to BC residents?
The 25% Overseas Transfer Charge (OTC) applies when the QROPS and the member are not in the same country. As a BC resident, your QROPS transfer goes into a Canadian RRSP – and you are resident in Canada – so the same-country exemption applies and the OTC does not arise on the residency test. A separate test applies to the Overseas Transfer Allowance (OTA): transfers exceeding the OTA threshold are subject to 25% on the excess, regardless of residency. Simon will assess your transfer value against the OTA as part of the initial consultation. Transfers within the OTA limit and meeting the residency test are not subject to any HMRC overseas charge.
What happens to my UK pension if I die before transferring it to a Canadian RRSP?
UK pensions remaining in the UK will, from April 2027, be included in your estate for UK Inheritance Tax – potentially taxed at 40% on amounts above the nil-rate band. Once transferred to a Canadian RRSP, your pension is outside the UK IHT regime entirely. Your Canadian beneficiaries receive the RRSP directly under Canadian rules, without UK tax involvement. This estate planning advantage is one of the primary reasons BC clients are accelerating their transfers ahead of April 2027.
Does BCFSA regulation affect the QROPS transfer process?
Simon Huften is licensed and regulated under the British Columbia Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) framework applicable to his advisory activities in BC. The QROPS transfer itself is governed by HMRC rules in the UK and CRA rules in Canada – provincial regulation applies to Simon’s conduct as an adviser, not to the transfer mechanics. Simon will explain the full regulatory picture during your consultation.
When should I reconsider a QROPS transfer?
A QROPS transfer may not be the right decision if: your DB pension carries Guaranteed Annuity Rates (GARs) or a Guaranteed Minimum Pension (GMP) that exceed the expected RRSP growth – these are permanently surrendered on transfer; you have a realistic intention to return to the UK within five years (the 5-year overseas transfer charge rule may apply retroactively); your CETV is below the threshold where transfer costs and complexity are proportionate; or your FCA-regulated adviser recommends against transfer following their statutory assessment. Simon will tell you clearly if a transfer is not right for your situation.
