Is Transferring Your UK Pension to Canada Worth It? The Benefits and the Trade-offs

For most British expats settled in Canada for good, bringing a UK workplace pension home into a Canadian QROPS RRSP means one currency, one tax system and one estate for your family to deal with. For some people, though, especially those with a generous Defined Benefit pension, leaving it in the UK is the better call.

This guide sets out both sides honestly. It’s the same conversation we have in every first consultation.

The Benefits of Transferring Your UK Pension to Canada

Lower Probate Costs, Depending on Your Province

Assets that pass to a named beneficiary generally don’t go through probate. What that saves depends on where you live.

Your Retirement Income Is in Canadian Dollars

Receive your pension in Canadian dollars (CAD) for more predictable retirement income. Choose when to convert your pension and reduce uncertainty from exchange-rate fluctuations. Plan your withdrawals with greater confidence, making it easier to manage everyday expenses and budget for retirement.

One Estate, One Set of Rules for Your Family

When you die, your executor deals with Canadian accounts under Canadian rules, not a UK pension administrator by post and phone across time zones. You name your beneficiaries directly on the account, and in most provinces those funds pass to them outside your will.

Your Spouse Inherits With Tax Deferred

As an RRSP or RRIF, your transferred pension can roll over to your spouse or common-law partner on death with no tax at that point. They pay tax only as they withdraw, under rules your Canadian accountant already works with.

A Clearer Position on UK Inheritance Tax From April 2027

From April 2027, unused UK pension funds may count towards your estate for inheritance tax. Transferring to a Canadian pension scheme may change your tax exposure, depending on your UK residence history and HMRC rules.

No More UK Tax Paperwork

Once your pension is in Canada, withdrawals are reported on your Canadian return only. There are no NT code applications, no UK forms to chase and no wondering whether the right amount was withheld. See our QROPS tax implications guide.

Control Over Investments and Income

You choose how the money is invested and how you draw it: regular payments, lump sums, or a mix. That’s within RRSP/RRIF rules, including RRIF minimum withdrawals from the year after you convert. It is managed in Canada by an adviser you can meet in person.

Optional Protection for Your Capital

Some Canadian investment options offered through {Industrial Alliance} include a guarantee on part or all of your transferred amount, at maturity or on death. These products have conditions and usually higher fees, so we show you both the protection and its cost. Insurance-based investments may also offer creditor protection.

The Trade-offs: When Transferring May Not Be Right

Have these ready, and we will tell you exactly which ones your schemes need:

You'd give up a valuable Defined Benefit promise

A final salary pension pays a guaranteed, often inflation-linked income for life. A transfer exchanges that for an invested pot. That’s why UK law requires regulated advice on DB transfers over £30,000. See Defined Benefit transfers.

You might leave Canada within five years

If you move to another country within five full UK tax years of the transfer, a 25% UK overseas transfer charge can apply.

Your pension is very large.

Transfers above the Overseas Transfer Allowance (£1,073,100 for most people) are charged 25% on the excess.

Exchange-rate timing

Converting all at once locks in that day’s rate, good or bad.

UK regulatory protection.

Your money moves from UK to Canadian regulation and investor protection schemes.

You want UK-based flexibility

Some people prefer an International SIPP or drawing their UK pension directly. Compare your options.

Who a Transfer Typically Suits

You are 55–70 (the UK minimum pension age rises to 57 on 6 April 2028), permanently settled in Canada, and your UK pension is worth £100,000 or more. You want simplicity for yourself and your family. That describes most of the people we help.

What It Costs You

There is no out-of-pocket fee for our work: we are paid by the Canadian investment provider, and we explain exactly how at your first call. See what a transfer costs you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth transferring my UK pension to Canada?

For most people settled permanently in Canada with a DC pension, yes: one currency, simpler estate and inheritance. For a generous DB pension, or if you may leave Canada within five years, often not. A short review will tell you.

It changes where the asset sits. Whether it falls fully outside UK inheritance tax after April 2027 depends on your UK residence history and HMRC’s final rules. We assess this individually.

The tax-free lump sum is a UK tax relief. As a Canadian resident, withdrawals are generally taxable in Canada either way, so transferring often changes less than people expect. We’ll model your numbers.

Within five full UK tax years, a 25% charge can apply. After that, your Canadian account remains yours. We plan around this before you transfer.

Yes. Your spouse or partner can receive the account on a tax-deferred rollover under Canadian rules.
