Should You Transfer Your UK Pension to Canada Before April 2027?

It is September 2026. April 2027 is approximately seven months away. If you hold a UK pension and you have been considering a transfer to Canada, you are now in the window where the decision genuinely needs to be made.

This page is not designed to push you toward a transfer. Simon Huften’s practice is built on recommending a transfer only when it is genuinely right for the client. What this page gives you is the honest framework to work out which side of that line you are on – and what the timing actually means for your options.

The Honest Question First: Is a Transfer Actually Right for You?

Not every British expat in Canada should transfer their UK pension. Some should leave it exactly where it is. Before the deadline creates pressure that overrides good judgement, here is the honest screening framework Simon Huften uses in every initial consultation. confirm your eligibility

Your Situation

Transfer Likely Makes Sense

Consider Leaving in UK or Further Assessment Required

Pension type

DC (SIPP, workplace money purchase) – straightforward case. DB – strong case if CETV is competitive and you do not need guaranteed income.

DB with exceptionally high guaranteed annuity rate (GAR) or guaranteed minimum pension (GMP) – these guaranteed benefits are permanently surrendered on transfer and cannot be recreated in Canada. NHS pension – transfers from the NHS Pension Scheme with more than two years’ membership to flexible benefit schemes have not been permitted since April 2015. Simon Huften confirms eligibility in consultation.

Age

55–70 – full transfer window available. Ample time for RRSP to compound before RRIF conversion at 71.

Under 55 – not yet eligible (minimum access age, rising to 57 in April 2028 – see eligibility page). Over 70 – RRIF conversion due December 31 of the year you turn 71 compresses the planning window significantly. Simon Huften assesses RRIF timeline from day one.

Canadian residency intention

Permanently settled in Canada – planning to retire here. No intention to leave Canada within the next 5 full UK tax years.

Considering leaving Canada within 5 full UK tax years post-transfer – the overseas transfer charge exemption requires you to remain Canadian-resident for that period. Leaving early triggers a 40% HMRC unauthorised payment charge minimum. This is a hard rule with no discretion.

Estate planning goal

Want to leave pension to Canadian beneficiaries. Want assets consolidated in CAD. Want pension governed by Canadian succession law, not UK IHT.

Beneficiaries are primarily UK-resident. UK succession planning already in place and IHT exposure is not a material concern given your LTR status and estate size.

IHT exposure

Have been out of the UK for more than 10 years – outside LTR net in most cases. Canadian RRSP will not be subject to UK IHT on death.

Left UK within the last 5 years – still potentially within LTR tail. IHT benefit of transfer may be time-delayed. Transfer may still be beneficial for other reasons – Simon Huften confirms your specific LTR position.

Currency preference

Want retirement income in Canadian dollars. Uncomfortable managing a GBP-denominated asset from Canada. Want to eliminate ongoing currency risk.

Want to keep the GBP asset as a currency hedge. Expect to spend significant time or money in the UK and value having a GBP-denominated retirement asset.

Not Sure Which Side of This Framework You Are On?

A free 20-minute consultation with Simon Huften will confirm your eligibility, pension type, and LTR position – the three factors that determine whether a transfer makes sense for you.

The Transfer Timeline - How Much Runway Do You Actually Have?

The April 2027 IHT deadline is fixed. What is less understood is how little runway exists between that deadline and the latest realistic date to start a transfer. Here is the honest timeline, based on Simon Huften’s direct experience completing transfers with UK scheme administrators.

Transfer Type

Typical Timeline

Latest Realistic Start

What Can Delay It

DB pension transfer (full DB pension transfer guide)

12–16 weeks from CETV request to funds received in Canada

December 2026 – any later and April 2027 completion is not guaranteed

UK scheme administrator processing times; CETV 3-month guarantee period; FCA adviser sourcing and scheduling; trustee sign-off queues that spike in Q4 as the deadline approaches

DC pension transfer (employer-sponsored, paragraph 60(j) eligible) (DC pension transfer guide)

6–10 weeks

February 2027 – earlier is safer

Provider processing backlogs (expected to spike pre-April 2027); CRA documentation; HMRC ROPS verification checks

Multiple pension transfers (DB + DC)

16–20 weeks for concurrent or sequential transfers

November 2026 at the latest

Each scheme has its own administrator and timeline. Sequential transfers are slower than concurrent. Simon Huften manages all simultaneously where possible.

DB with mandatory FCA advice step (CETV exceeds £30,000)

Add 4–6 weeks for FCA adviser sourcing, analysis, and Certificate of Advice issuance

October–November 2026

FCA-regulated advisers specialising in overseas DB transfers are a limited pool. Pre-deadline demand is increasing. Do not leave the FCA step until January 2027.

The single most common mistake Simon Huften sees in this market: clients who intend to transfer, delay the initial consultation until after Christmas, and then discover their DB transfer cannot be completed before April 2027. A consultation takes 20 minutes. An eligibility check takes a few days. The transfer process that follows takes months.

One Specific Timing Rule You Must Know: The CETV 3-Month Guarantee

For DB pension transfers, the process begins with requesting a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) from your UK scheme – the lump sum your scheme will pay in exchange for giving up your future income entitlement.

What most people do not know: a CETV has a 3-month guarantee date. If you do not complete the transfer within that window, the CETV expires. You must then request a new one – incurring a scheme-set fee (typically charged on any second CETV request within a 12-month period) and restarting the guarantee clock.

This means the sequence matters enormously. Do not request a CETV until you are ready to proceed. Simon Huften coordinates the CETV request timing as part of his transfer management – it is one of the most common avoidable errors he prevents.

Timing Note

1

Book free consultation with Simon Huften – eligibility confirmed, pension type and approximate value established, LTR position assessed

Do this first – before contacting your UK scheme or requesting a CETV

2

FCA advice sourced and Certificate of Advice obtained (DB pensions where CETV exceeds £30,000)

Must be underway before or concurrent with CETV request – timed to avoid CETV expiry. Simon Huften coordinates the FCA adviser.

3

CETV requested from UK scheme

3-month guarantee clock starts here. Do not request until ready to proceed – a second request within 12 months incurs a scheme-set fee.

4

QROPS account opened at iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance

Simon Huften manages this – runs concurrently with CETV process

5

HMRC ROPS paperwork and transfer instruction submitted

Coordinated by Simon Huften – typically 4–8 weeks from CETV receipt

6

Funds received in Canadian RRSP

Transfer complete – pension is now outside UK IHT exposure (subject to your LTR position at date of death)

What Happens If You Miss the April 2027 Deadline?

The April 2027 deadline is not a cliff edge that makes a transfer permanently wrong if you miss it. Here is the accurate picture of what changes – and what does not.

Outcome

Before April 2027 Transfer

After April 2027 – No Transfer

After April 2027 – Transfer Complete Post-Deadline

UK pension – IHT status

UK pension outside IHT estate under current rules

UK pension included in IHT estate at 40% above nil-rate band on death

UK pension no longer held – IHT question now concerns RRSP and LTR status

Canadian RRSP – IHT status

RRSP not yet holding transferred funds

N/A – pension still in UK scheme

RRSP subject to UK IHT only if LTR test applies – outside net for most long-term Canadian residents

IHT on pension growth post-2027

N/A – transferred before deadline

Every year the pension grows in the UK scheme, the IHT-exposed value increases

Removed from UK IHT exposure from point of transfer – no further IHT accumulation on RRSP

Transfer route availability

Open – iA Clarington and Industrial Alliance both ROPS-listed

Open – transfer route remains available after April 2027

Complete – no further action needed

What Does One Month of Delay Actually Cost?

Missing the April 2027 deadline does not trigger an immediate tax bill. It means your pension remains in the UK IHT regime – and if you die while it is still there, your estate pays 40% IHT on the pot above the nil-rate band. For a £500,000 pension pot, the IHT liability above the £325,000 nil-rate band is £70,000. Every month your pension remains in the UK system after April 2027 is a month in which your estate carries that liability on death. If your pension grows at 5% per year, the monthly IHT-exposed growth on a £500,000 pot is approximately £2,083 – added to the estate’s IHT exposure each month. A post-deadline transfer removes that exposure from the point of completion. Every month of further delay extends the window during which your estate is exposed.

This is not a reason to panic – it is a reason to act methodically. The right move is to book a consultation immediately, understand your exact timeline, and begin the process.

Your Next Step - The Free Consultation

Every transfer Simon Huften has completed began with a 20-minute free consultation. In that call, he confirms the factors that determine whether a transfer is right for you – and gives you a realistic timeline before any paperwork begins.

01

Your eligibility - pension type, age, Canadian residency status

Confirms you are in the transfer window before any paperwork begins. This is where NHS pension ineligibility is identified – before the CETV process is started.

02

Your minimum pension size and whether the transfer is financially justified

Simon Huften confirms whether your specific pot size makes a transfer worthwhile given OTA, transfer costs, and estate planning benefit. Minimum pension size is typically £100,000 – but the financial case depends on your specific situation. Do not self-disqualify before speaking with him.

03

Your UK pension type and approximate CETV value

Determines whether FCA advice is required, which transfer path applies, and what the realistic timeline looks like for your specific scheme.

04

Your LTR status (in conjunction with UK tax specialist)

Establishes your actual IHT exposure before and after transfer – removes guesswork from the primary decision driver for most clients.

05

Your OTA position - any prior overseas transfers

Confirms no 25% overseas transfer charge applies to your transfer. Cumulative OTA must be confirmed before proceeding.

06

Your CETV estimate and comparison modelling (DB transfers)

For DB transfers: compares the income-for-life value against the CETV lump sum in Canadian terms. This is the most important financial comparison in the process – it determines whether giving up guaranteed DB income is justified.

07

Your realistic completion date given your specific pension

Confirms whether April 2027 completion is achievable and which steps must start immediately. Simon Huften will tell you honestly if your DB transfer cannot make the deadline – and what the post-deadline transfer timeline looks like instead.

There is no charge for this consultation. Simon Huften is compensated by iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance on completion of a transfer – not by the client. There is no fee to you at any stage of the process.

If the consultation confirms a transfer is not right for your situation, Simon will tell you that directly. His reputation in this niche is built on clients who transferred correctly, not on transfers that should not have happened.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a DB and a DC pension - should I transfer both before April 2027?

Potentially, yes – but they are assessed separately. Your DB pension requires a CETV and potentially FCA advice. Your DC pension is typically more straightforward. Simon Huften assesses both in a single consultation and develops a transfer strategy that sequences them correctly to meet the April 2027 window where possible. Starting the consultation in September or October 2026 gives the best chance of completing both before the deadline.

Some UK pension schemes have been slow to process CETV requests, particularly as the April 2027 deadline approaches and request volumes increase. Simon Huften manages the scheme communication directly and, where possible, uses escalation routes available to regulated advisers. If a scheme refuses or delays unreasonably, he advises on the options available – including formal complaints to The Pensions Ombudsman. This is another reason to start the process in Q3 or Q4 2026 rather than in January 2027.

Yes, for most clients at 68. You are within the eligibility window (55–70). Your RRSP must convert to a RRIF by December 31 of the year you turn 71 – Simon Huften builds the RRIF conversion plan into the transfer strategy from day one so there are no surprises. The IHT benefit, currency consolidation, and estate planning improvement apply at any eligible age. The transfer process for a 68-year-old client is identical to that for a 60-year-old – only the RRIF timeline planning differs.

Yes. The transfer route remains open after April 2027. Your pension will be subject to UK IHT on your death from April 2027 until the transfer completes – but completing the transfer post-deadline still removes that ongoing IHT exposure from the point of transfer. If you are reading this after April 2027, the right move is to book a consultation immediately rather than wait further. Every additional month of delay extends the window during which your estate carries the IHT liability.

Simon Huften’s consultation covers the full financial case: CETV versus income-for-life comparison for DB pensions, currency position, OTA impact, RRSP growth projections, and estate planning outcomes. The IHT benefit is one factor – for some clients it is the primary driver. For others, currency consolidation or income flexibility matters more. The consultation builds the complete picture specific to your pension and your situation. If the transfer is not financially justified, Simon will tell you that directly.

Simon Huften will confirm this in the free consultation rather than giving a blanket answer here. The minimum pension size Strata typically works with is £100,000, but the financial case depends on your specific pot size, OTA position, IHT exposure, and estate planning goals. Do not self-disqualify without speaking to Simon first – a 20-minute consultation costs you nothing and gives you a definitive answer on whether the transfer makes sense for your specific situation.
