How a QROPS Pension Transfer to Canada Works - Step by Step
The most common reason British expats delay their QROPS transfer is not cost, eligibility, or paperwork. It is uncertain about what the process actually involves. What do they need to do? What does the advisor do? How long does it take? What could go wrong?
This page answers all of it. The five stages below are explained in full – what happens at each stage, who is responsible for what, how long each takes, and what can cause delays. By the end, you will have a complete picture of the transfer process before you speak to anyone.
If you want the quick overview first, see the process summary on our QROPS Canada page. If you want the full technical detail – keep reading.

04
Weeks 4–6 (DC) Weeks 10–14 (DB)

| Defined Benefit (DB) | Defined Contribution (DC) |
Also called | Final salary, career average | Money purchase, workplace, auto-enrolment |
CETV required? | Yes – UK scheme must provide a Cash Equivalent Transfer Value | No – fund value is printed on your annual statement |
FCA advice required? | Yes – if CETV exceeds £30,000 | No – in most cases |
Typical timeline | 12–16 weeks with active CETV management ★ | 6–8 weeks |
Main reason for extra time | CETV processing (3–4 weeks) + FCA advice stage (4–6 weeks) – managed concurrently where possible | No extra stages – straight to transfer instruction |
Strata QROPS achieves 12–16 weeks for DB transfers through active CETV management – initiating the FCA referral early and coordinating stages concurrently to avoid sequential delays. Most other advisors report 6–12 months for DB transfers. The difference is process management, not the transfer mechanism.
Note:
Steps 2 and 3 apply to Defined Benefit pensions only. If you hold a Defined Contribution pension, your process moves directly from Step 1 to Step 4.
Step 1
Confirm Your Eligibility - Free Consultation with Simon Huften
Everything begins with a free 20-minute phone consultation. No forms to complete first, no documents to gather, no commitment of any kind. Simon Huften reviews three things with you:
01
Your pension type
Defined Benefit, Defined Contribution, personal pension, or SIPP. If you are not sure, he identifies it from your pension statement.
02
Your age and residency status
Confirming you fall within the 55–70 eligibility window and are permanently resident in Canada.
03
Your pension scheme details
The name of your employer’s scheme, whether it is funded, and whether any known restrictions apply (scheme deficits, safeguarded benefits, public sector status).
Your pension type
- Whether your pension is eligible to transfer
- Which of the five steps below apply to your specific situation
- Your realistic transfer timeline - including the 12–16 week DB timeline if applicable
- Whether any out-of-pocket costs apply (DB pensions over £30,000 only)
If your pension is not eligible – for example, if it is an unfunded public sector scheme – Simon will tell you within the first few minutes. You save time, and you lose nothing.
DB Pension Holders – April 2027 IHT Deadline: From April 2027, UK pension death benefits become subject to 40% UK Inheritance Tax. A DB transfer started today completes well before the deadline. Your window is open now – but it will not stay open indefinitely. Find out how the April 2027 changes affect your pension →
Step 2
Request Your Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) DB Pensions Only
If you hold a Defined Contribution pension, skip to Step 4. This step applies to Defined Benefit pensions only.
What Is a CETV?
A Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) is a lump-sum figure that your UK Defined Benefit scheme offers in exchange for giving up your right to a guaranteed future income. Instead of receiving a pension of, say, £18,000 per year for life, the scheme converts that guaranteed income into a single cash figure – the CETV – which can then be transferred out.
How the CETV is calculated:
- Your scheme projects your guaranteed future pension payments
- It adjusts for your age, the scheme's funding level, and any early retirement factors
- It discounts those payments back to a present-day lump sum using actuarial assumptions and interest rate benchmarks
The resulting figure is your CETV. It is a guaranteed quotation, typically valid for three months from the date of issue. Strata QROPS initiates the CETV request on your behalf – you do not contact your scheme directly.
How Long Does the CETV Take?
UK pension schemes are legally required to provide a CETV within three months of request. Most funded occupational schemes respond within 3 to 4 weeks. Legacy schemes and large multi-employer schemes can take longer. Simon monitors the request and chases if the response is delayed. If your UK scheme is slow to respond, Simon escalates through formal channels - UK pension schemes have a legal obligation to provide a CETV within three months and most respond well before that deadline when an advisor is actively following up.
What Happens After the CETV Arrives?
If your CETV exceeds £30,000 – which it will for the vast majority of DB pension holders – UK FCA regulations require you to obtain written independent financial advice before the transfer can proceed. This is Step 3. If your CETV is below £30,000, you move directly to Step 4.
Step 3
FCA Independent Financial Advice - DB Pensions Over £30,000 Only
If you hold a Defined Contribution pension, skip to Step 4. This step applies to Defined Benefit pensions where the transfer value exceeds £30,000.
How Strata QROPS Handles This Step
Simon Huften works with a network of FCA-regulated UK independent financial advisors who specialise in DB pension transfer cases. At the appropriate point in your transfer, he refers you directly to one of these partners.
What this means for you:
- You do not need to find an FCA advisor yourself
- Simon coordinates the referral and briefs the UK advisor on your case
- The advisor contacts you directly, reviews your full financial picture, and provides written advice
- The Certificate of Advice is submitted to your UK scheme to authorise release of funds
Simon initiates the FCA referral at the earliest possible point – often running it concurrently with CETV processing – to keep the overall DB timeline at 12–16 weeks. Scheduling delays with UK IFAs are the most common cause of DB timeline extensions; Simon’s early referral process is specifically designed to absorb this risk.
Why Is FCA Advice Required?
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) introduced this requirement to protect DB pension holders from transferring without fully understanding what they are giving up. A guaranteed income for life has real, significant value. The FCA wants you to receive written, personalised advice from a regulated UK professional confirming that transferring is suitable for your circumstances – before you can proceed. This is a consumer protection measure, not a barrier.
Cost
The FCA advice fee is paid directly to the UK IFA - not to Strata QROPS. Simon will give you a realistic cost estimate for your specific case during your initial consultation. This is the only out-of-pocket cost in the entire transfer process.
Step 4
Transfer Instructions to Your UK Scheme
Once eligibility is confirmed, the CETV received (DB only), and FCA advice completed (DB only), the formal transfer instruction is submitted. This is the stage where your pension officially begins to move.
Typical processing time at Step 4
2–4 weeks
from instruction to fund release, for both DC and DB pensions.
What Happens at This Stage
Simon prepares the transfer instruction package. This typically includes:
01
Transfer discharge form – Provided by your UK scheme. You complete and sign this to authorise the transfer.
02
RRSP acceptance documentation – Completed by Simon on behalf of your Canadian RRSP provider, confirming the receiving account details.
03
Certificate of Advice – (DB pensions over £30,000 only) Submitted to the scheme as regulatory authorisation to proceed.
04
HMRC notification – The UK scheme notifies HMRC that a QROPS qualifying transfer is taking place. This is handled automatically by your scheme administrator.
05
ROPS list confirmation – Simon verifies your receiving RRSP is on the current HMRC ROPS list at the point of transfer instruction. The list is updated monthly; confirming status at transfer – not just at initiation – protects against any mid-process list changes.
Step 4 Delays
Common Delays at This Stage - and How Simon Manages Them
Step 4 is where most delays occur. Here is what causes them and how Simon handles each:
Delay Factor
What Causes It
How Simon Manages It
01
UK scheme administrator backlog
Legacy occupational schemes can take longer than modern workplace pension providers. Some schemes prioritise paperwork in batches.
Chases regularly. Escalates through the scheme’s formal complaints process if unreasonably delayed.
02
CETV quotation deadline expiry
CETVs have a guaranteed quotation period – typically 3 months. If the transfer does not complete in time, a new CETV must be requested.
Monitors CETV deadline actively. Coordinates all stages to complete within the guarantee period. This is the primary reason Strata QROPS achieves 12–16 weeks for DB transfers.
03
FCA advice scheduling delays
FCA-regulated advisors in the UK have their own lead times. Some specialist DB advisors book 3–4 weeks out.
Works with a network of trusted UK IFA partners. Initiates referral at the earliest possible stage – often before CETV arrives – to eliminate scheduling as a bottleneck.
04
Incomplete paperwork
Missing signatures, outdated address on scheme records, or discrepancies between documents can stall processing.
Reviews all documents before submission. Sends a checklist of requirements before the process begins.
05
HMRC notification period
HMRC must be notified of qualifying QROPS transfers. Usually automatic and adds no meaningful delay – but errors in scheme details can cause a hold.
Verifies scheme details against HMRC’s ROPS list before initiating transfer instruction.
06
UK scheme resistance or delay without valid legal grounds
Rare, but some UK schemes resist or create administrative barriers to eligible transfers. Usually resolved once formal escalation begins.
Escalates through formal regulatory channels immediately. UK pension schemes have a legal obligation to process eligible transfer requests. Persistent resistance is escalated to the Pensions Ombudsman if required.
Step 5
Your Pension Lands in Your Canadian RRSP
This is the moment your pension becomes Canadian.
What Happens When Your Funds Arrive
Your UK pension funds are released by your scheme and transferred directly into your Canadian RRSP. Under paragraph 60(j) of Canada’s Income Tax Act, the receipt is treated as a qualifying pension rollover – meaning:
- No Canadian income tax is payable on the funds at the point of arrival
- No UK withholding tax is deducted - the transfer is protected under the UK-Canada tax treaty
- Your full CETV (DB) or fund value (DC) arrives intact, minus any exit fees your UK scheme charges (rare)
- The funds are immediately invested according to your chosen risk profile through iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance
CRA Confirmation
Your Canadian RRSP provider notifies the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) of the pension rollover under paragraph 60(j). You receive a tax slip confirming the transfer for your records. This slip is used in your Canadian tax return for the year of transfer - your accountant or Simon will advise on how to report it correctly.
What Happens to Your Pension After Transfer
Your pension now sits inside your Canadian RRSP – growing tax-deferred, invested in funds you choose, in the currency you live in. By age 71, Canadian rules require you to convert your RRSP into a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) and begin minimum annual withdrawals. These withdrawals are taxable as Canadian income at your marginal rate.
“Simon managed the entire process from start to finish. My DB pension transferred in just under 15 weeks – including the FCA advice stage. I did not have to chase anything or deal with my UK scheme directly once.”

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
The honest answer depends entirely on your pension type – and on how actively the transfer is managed.
01
6–8 weeks
Defined Contribution (DC)
No CETV. No FCA advice. Straight from eligibility check to transfer instruction to RRSP receipt.
Comfortable window – ample time to complete before April 2027.
02
8–12 weeks
Defined Benefit (DB) - under £30,000 CETV
CETV required (3–4 weeks). No FCA advice needed. Transfer instruction and processing (4–6 weeks).
Still achievable before April 2027 – start immediately.
03
12–16 weeks ★
Defined Benefit (DB) - over £30,000 CETV
CETV (3–4 weeks) + FCA advice initiated early, run concurrently (4–6 weeks) + transfer instruction (2–4 weeks). Stages managed in parallel where possible.
Start now. Window is closing. Contact Simon Huften immediately.
★ The 12–16 week DB timeline is achieved through active CETV management and early concurrent FCA referral. Most advisors report DB transfers taking 6–12 months because they process stages sequentially. Simon’s process runs preparation stages in parallel wherever possible – this is the primary reason Strata QROPS DB timelines are faster than the industry average.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if my UK pension scheme refuses to transfer?
Refusal is rare for eligible pensions but it does happen, usually for administrative reasons rather than legitimate legal grounds. If your scheme resists transfer without valid justification, Simon Huften escalates through formal regulatory channels immediately. UK pension schemes have a legal obligation to process transfer requests for eligible members. Most resistance is resolved within 2 to 3 weeks of formal escalation. In persistent cases, the Pensions Ombudsman can be engaged.
Can I begin the transfer process before I turn 55?
No. The UK minimum pension access age is 55. The transfer cannot formally begin – and no CETV can be requested – before your 55th birthday. However, if you are approaching 55, you can use the time productively. Gather your pension paperwork, confirm your scheme details, and book a preliminary consultation with Simon Huften so that you are ready to proceed immediately after your birthday. The process can begin on day one of eligibility.
What currency does my pension arrive in?
Your UK pension funds are held in British pounds at your UK scheme. When they are released, they are converted to Canadian dollars at the institutional exchange rate at the point of transfer. Strata QROPS coordinates the currency conversion through your Canadian RRSP provider – iA Clarington or Industrial Alliance. Institutional exchange rates are significantly more favourable than retail bank rates. The converted CAD amount arrives directly in your RRSP.
Do I need a UK bank account to complete the transfer?
No. The transfer moves directly from your UK pension scheme to your Canadian RRSP. You do not need an active UK bank account. In rare cases, a UK scheme may insist on paying to a UK bank account first – if this happens, Simon Huften identifies this early and advises on the correct approach. For the vast majority of transfers, no UK bank account is required or involved.
