You have a UK employer pension. You live in Canada. You want your pension here. You may have read that this is no longer possible. It is – and here is the proof.

This page answers three questions: can you transfer, what exactly happens when you do, and what it costs. If you want the full educational guide on how QROPS works – the tax picture, the seven reasons British expats transfer, the DB vs DC comparison – read our QROPS Canada guide. Is QROPS in Canada Still Available? Yes - Here Is the Proof.

You may have seen claims that Canada has no HMRC-recognised pension schemes and that transferring a UK pension to Canada is impossible. This is incorrect. HMRC’s published ROPS list for Canada currently includes seven approved schemes – including the exact providers Strata QROPS works with:

Strata QROPS works exclusively with iA Clarington and Industrial Alliance – two of the four QROPS-approved RRSP providers on this list. Simon Huften has completed transfers using these providers in 2025 and 2026. The mechanism exists, it is HMRC-approved, and it is operational. The confusion arises from advisors conflating standard RRSP contributions – which cannot receive UK pension funds – with QROPS-approved RRSP schemes under paragraph 60(j) of the Canadian Income Tax Act, which can and do.

One more thing worth knowing for 2026

UK pension transfer regulations have tightened this year, including a requirement from April 2026 that UK registered pension schemes have a UK-resident scheme administrator. These changes reflect the UK government's push for greater oversight of overseas transfers - not a restriction on Canadian transfers specifically. Canada meets the transparency requirements under its tax treaty with the UK. For British expats permanently resident in Canada, these regulatory changes reinforce the value of working with a specialist who monitors the ROPS list and regulatory environment on your behalf.

Can You Transfer? The Three-Condition Eligibility Check

The mechanism that makes a UK pension transfer to Canada possible is called QROPS – Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme. It is HMRC-approved, legally established, and operational in Canada through seven approved schemes. You qualify if you meet all three of the following conditions:

01

UK employer pension

Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution. Personal pensions in most cases. State pension and unfunded public sector pensions (NHS, teachers, police) cannot transfer.

02

Aged 55 to 70

55 is the UK pension access age. Transfer cannot begin before this birthday. The practical upper limit is 70.

03

Permanently resident in Canada

Citizenship not required – permanent residency is sufficient. You must intend to remain in Canada long-term. Simon Huften works with British expats across all Canadian provinces.

Meet all three? Your transfer is almost certainly viable. Not sure about your specific pension type? The full eligibility guide covers every scenario.

Which Type of Pension Do You Have - and Does It Change Anything?

Yes – your pension type affects the timeline and complexity, but not the outcome. Both Defined Benefit and Defined Contribution pensions can transfer to Canada. The difference is in the process.

Defined Contribution (DC)

The simpler route. Money purchase, workplace, or auto-enrolment pensions. Your fund value is transparent on your latest statement. No FCA advice required in most cases. Standard timeline: 6–8 weeks, though some UK schemes are currently taking longer – Simon will give you a realistic estimate for your specific scheme at the first consultation.

Defined Benefit (DB)

Final salary or career average schemes. More valuable – and more complex. Pensions over £30,000 require written independent advice from an FCA-regulated UK advisor before transfer can proceed. Strata QROPS coordinates this referral. Timeline: 12–16 weeks. The extra time is the FCA advice stage, not the transfer itself.

Not sure which you have? Check your pension paperwork for the words “final salary,” “career average,” or “guaranteed income” – those indicate Defined Benefit. A fund value that grows with contributions and market returns is Defined Contribution.

What Actually Happens - Week by Week From Start to Finish

Most advisors give you a five-step overview. Here is what those steps actually look like from your side – what Simon does, and what you experience, at each stage.

01

Day 1

Pension Type: DB + DC

What Simon Does

Review your pension type, age, and residency. Confirms eligibility. Explains your specific process.

What You Experience

You know within 20 minutes whether transfer is viable – and exactly what happens next. No cost, no commitment.

02

Week 1

Pension Type: DB + DC

What Simon Does

Contact your UK scheme. Requests discharge paperwork (DC) or initiates CETV request (DB). Confirms IA Clarington / IAG ROPS status at point of initiation.

What You Experience

You receive confirmation your scheme has been contacted. For DC pensions, discharge forms arrive quickly – often within days.

03

Weeks 1–4

Pension Type: DB only

What Simon Does

Chase CETV from a UK scheme. UK schemes have 3 months to respond but most respond in 3–4 weeks. Important: the CETV has a 3-month guarantee date – Simon times the FCA advice stage specifically to complete within this window to avoid the need for a second CETV request.

What You Experience

DC pensions: paperwork signed and transfer instruction submitted. You are nearly done. DB pensions: waiting for CETV – Simon updates you regularly.

04

Weeks 4–10

Pension Type: DB only

What Simon Does

Refers you to FCA-regulated UK IFA for mandatory written advice. Coordinates the advice process. Monitors CETV guarantee window.

What You Experience

You receive written advice from an FCA advisor recommending whether to proceed. This is a protection for you – not an obstacle. DC pensions skip this stage entirely.

05

Weeks 4–6 (DC) Weeks 10–14 (DB)

Pension Type: DB + DC

What Simon Does

Submits formal transfer instruction to your UK scheme. HMRC notified automatically. Confirms ROPS list status at point of transfer instruction.

What You Experience

Your UK scheme administrator processes the release. Simon monitors progress and chases if there are delays.

06

Week 6–8 (DC) Week 14–16 (DB)

Pension Type: DB + DC

What Simon Does

Confirms RRSP receipt with your Canadian provider. Sends you CRA confirmation.

What You Experience

Your pension arrives in your Canadian RRSP via paragraph 60(j) rollover – tax-free. You receive written confirmation. The transfer is complete.

Typical total timeline: 6–8 weeks for DC pensions · 12–16 weeks for DB pensions. Note that some UK schemes are currently processing DC transfers more slowly than the historical average – Simon will give you a realistic timeline for your specific scheme at the first consultation.

April 2027 IHT Deadline – DB Pension Holders: From April 2027, UK pension death benefits become subject to 40% UK Inheritance Tax. A DB pension transfer started today (September 2026) completes by January 2027 – within the deadline. A DB transfer started after December 2026 may not complete in time. If protecting your pension from the April 2027 IHT regime is a priority, the timeline starts now.

"Do I have to manage all the back-and-forth with my UK scheme?"

The single most common question Simon gets:

The answer is no. Simon handles the scheme contact, the paperwork chasing, the HMRC notification, the ROPS list verification, and the coordination with the Canadian RRSP provider. Your job is to sign documents when asked and answer questions when they arise.

“The timeline Simon gave me at the start was exactly right. My DC pension was in my Canadian RRSP in seven weeks. Every step was exactly as he described.”

– David M., Ontario | Defined Contribution Transfer, 2025

Defined Benefit vs Defined Contribution - Which Applies to You?

Your transfer path depends entirely on your pension type. The two types follow different rules, different processes, and different timelines.

What You Need

Why Simon Needs It

Most recent pension statement

Shows pension type, current value, and scheme details. For DC pensions, this is the only financial document required.

Scheme name and administrator contact

Simon contacts your UK scheme directly to request paperwork. You do not need to manage this – he handles it.

Proof of Canadian residency

Driver’s licence, utility bill, or government letter confirming your Canadian address. Standard compliance requirement.

Your date of birth

Confirms you meet the age 55 eligibility requirement. Required by both your UK scheme and the Canadian RRSP provider.

National Insurance number (if available)

Useful for identifying your UK scheme records, particularly if you have multiple past employer pensions.

Whether you have started taking income from your pension

If you have already begun drawing income from your UK pension – known as “crystallising” – your transfer options are more restricted. Let Simon know before the consultation so he can prepare the right assessment. This does not disqualify you, but it changes the approach.

If you cannot find all of this, do not let it delay you. Simon will tell you exactly what is needed for your specific pension during the consultation and can guide you on how to retrieve anything that is missing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a UK pension transfer to Canada actually take?

Defined Contribution pensions typically complete in 6 to 8 weeks from first consultation to RRSP receipt, though some UK schemes are currently processing more slowly than the historical average – Simon will give you a specific estimate for your scheme at the first consultation. Defined Benefit pensions take 12 to 16 weeks – the extra time comes from the Cash Equivalent Transfer Value (CETV) request from your UK scheme (3–4 weeks) and the FCA independent advice stage (4–6 weeks). The actual transfer instruction and fund release is typically 2–3 weeks once all preparation is complete.

Nothing – with one exception. Strata QROPS charges zero fees. We receive commission from Canadian investment providers – iA Clarington and Industrial Alliance – only after your transfer completes. This commission structure is standard across all HMRC-approved QROPS providers in Canada and is fully disclosed in your transfer documentation. The one potential out-of-pocket cost is the FCA independent advice fee for Defined Benefit pensions over £30,000 – typically paid directly to the UK IFA, not to Strata QROPS. Simon explains the expected cost for your specific situation during your free consultation.

Your pension remains in your UK scheme until the moment it is released and transferred. There is no period where it is “in transit” and unprotected. The funds move directly from your UK scheme to your Canadian RRSP – they are not held in a third-party account at any point. The process is governed by HMRC and CRA rules on both ends. Simon monitors the transfer at each stage and confirms ROPS list status at both initiation and at the point of transfer instruction.

Yes. Many clients have two or three workplace pensions from different UK employers, accumulated over a career. Each pension transfers separately – they go through the same process but run in parallel where possible. All can land in the same Canadian RRSP. Simon assesses each pension individually and coordinates the transfers efficiently. If one pension is DB and another is DC, the DC pension will typically complete first.

Yes. QROPS transfers to Canada are available, operational, and HMRC-approved in 2026. HMRC’s current ROPS list for Canada includes seven approved schemes – including IA Clarington Investments Inc Retirement Savings Plan (QROPS), IA Clarington Investment Inc Retirement Income Fund (QROPS), IAG Saving and Retirement Plan RRSP-QROPS, and IAG Saving and Retirement Plan RRIF-QROPS. Strata QROPS works exclusively with iA Clarington and Industrial Alliance, both of which are on this list. Simon Huften has completed transfers using these providers in 2025 and 2026. The confusion in some online sources arises from conflating standard RRSP contributions – which cannot receive UK pension funds – with QROPS-approved RRSP schemes under paragraph 60(j) of the Canadian Income Tax Act, which can and do. If you have seen claims that the transfer is impossible, verify the current HMRC ROPS list directly.
